Kellogg turned Evanston into a 42‑challenge welcome.

Every summer, Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management welcomes incoming international MBA students with ACE, a three-week acculturation program. One afternoon of it became a race across Evanston: about 100 students, 42 challenges, under three hours.

30 of 42 challenges completed by the winning team. With more stops than time, even the winners left some on the board, which was the point.

A new country, a new town, and an MBA about to begin.

ACE is unique to Kellogg. It gives incoming international students the skills and confidence to succeed in an American MBA classroom, and a head start on everyday American life.

Part of that is simply knowing where you live. Evanston was about to be home, and a campus map in a welcome packet doesn't make a town feel familiar. The program wanted something students would actually do together: get out of the building, talk to each other, and come back knowing their way around.

And it had to work for a big group of students from around the world, many of them just getting to know each other.

Evanston's landmarks, plus the places only Kellogg people know.

We started with the Evanston favorites every visitor should find: murals, historic buildings and statues around town. Then Kellogg added its own picks, the spots that make Northwestern feel like Northwestern, like the Weber Arch, Deering Library and "The Rock."

The Rock is a good example of why local knowledge matters. It has sat between University Hall and Harris Hall since the 1940s, and student groups repaint it for holidays and events, so it works as a campus billboard. No guidebook tells you that. A challenge can.

A hundred students, one afternoon, all over town.

Teams set off across Evanston to find as many of the 42 as they could before time ran out.

More stops than time.

Forty-two challenges in under three hours is deliberately too many. Teams can't do everything, so they have to decide what to go after: which corner of town, which landmarks, which points are worth the walk. For a program about working together across cultures, those street-corner debates are the real exercise.

It also keeps the finish exciting. The winning team completed 30 of the 42, so the race stayed open all afternoon.

Design note for orientation leaders: build more challenges than a team can finish, spread them wide, and mix the famous landmarks with the places students will actually use: the library, a favorite coffee shop, the career center.

Your campus, your town, your welcome week.

Orientation, residence life, admitted-student days or a club kickoff. The setup is the same. Plans start at $49/mo, or our team builds it with you.

  1. Step 1

    Pick the places that matter

Landmarks for fun, and the resources you want students to find in week one.

  2. Step 2

    Share one code at orientation

Put it on a slide, a poster or a QR code. Students play in their phone's browser and log in to submit.

  3. Step 3

    Review and celebrate

Approve photos as they come in and add a live leaderboard, then download every photo for the welcome slideshow.
