Event Spotlight: Northalsted #WalkwithPride Tour

Located just north of Lincoln Park in Lakeview, Chicago’s Northalsted neighborhood, is a vibrant and diverse area located on the city’s north side. This neighborhood is known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community, with rainbow flags adorning many of the storefronts and bars. Northalsted is a popular destination for visitors to Chicago, both for its lively nightlife scene and its welcoming atmosphere. Being located in Evanston this is one of our nearby partners and we love seeing the engagement and activity from the community during events!

One of the most iconic features of Northalsted is the rainbow-colored pylons that line Halsted Street. These pillars were installed in 1998 as part of the city’s Pride celebration and have become a symbol of the neighborhood’s inclusivity and diversity. The pylons are lit up at night, creating a colorful and festive atmosphere that draws visitors from all over the city. We recently worked with the Northalsted Business Alliance to create their digital #WalkwithPride Art Tour, highlight the beautiful murals, pylons, and memorials throughout the neighborhood.

In addition to the rainbow pylons, Northalsted is home to many LGBTQ+-owned businesses, including bars, restaurants, and boutiques. These establishments are often decorated with rainbow flags, and many of them offer events and specials during Pride Month in June. Some popular spots include Roscoe’s, Sidetrack, and The North End.

Northalsted is also home to a number of cultural events throughout the year. One of the most popular is Market Days, a two-day street festival held every August. The festival features food, music, and vendors selling a variety of goods. Northalsted also hosts a Halloween parade each year, which draws large crowds and features elaborate costumes and floats.

Despite its reputation as a LGBTQ+ neighborhood, Northalsted is a welcoming and inclusive community that is open to all. Visitors of all backgrounds and identities are welcome to explore the neighborhood’s many shops, restaurants, and bars. Many of the businesses in Northalsted actively support LGBTQ+ causes, and the neighborhood as a whole has a strong sense of community.

One of the unique features of Northalsted is the Legacy Walk, a series of plaques along Halsted Street that commemorate the achievements of LGBTQ+ individuals throughout history. The plaques highlight figures from a wide range of fields, including literature, politics, and entertainment. The Legacy Walk is a powerful reminder of the contributions that LGBTQ+ individuals have made to society, and it serves as an inspiration to future generations.

The Northalsted #WalkwithPride Art Tour is one of our favorite events because it highlights the vibrant and welcoming neighborhood which celebrates the LGBTQ+ community and embraces diversity. Its rainbow pylons, LGBTQ+-owned businesses, and cultural events make it a popular destination for visitors to Chicago and locals alike. Whether you’re looking for a night out on the town, a cultural experience, or simply a place to explore and enjoy, Northalsted has something for everyone. Check it out on the Roamli app using the code: “NOHAPRIDE” or view the online interactive map directly on the Northalsted website. Happy Roaming!
